How To Make Whipped Coffee [+ Exclusive Tips For Better Taste]

You’ve probably heard of whipped coffee or dalgona coffee by now. It began as a viral sensation, and now it has become the mainstay for morning caffeinated beverages.

It’s also a basic concept.

Just whip equal parts of water together, instant coffee and sugar together. Then add the fluffy, cloud-like foam into your cup of milk, and that's it. You are done! We can now see why it was part of Google’s most popular recipes in 2020

However, regardless of the sudden internet popularity (talk about late bloomer), whipped coffee has been around for a long time. And it's also a traditional beverage in various parts of the world!

The beverage goes by different names depending on where you are in the world. For example, in Korea, whipped coffee is known as Dalgona coffee; it’s called Frappe in Greece, and Beaten coffee in India.

How To Make Whipped Coffee

Even though it’s easy to make dalgona coffee, we’ll show you how to make a whipped instant coffee drink that tastes excellent! You’ll also get to know some helpful tips.

For the whipped coffee recipe, you’ll need instant coffee, sugar, and hot water (close to boiling). Yes. You only need three ingredients! Aside from the whipped coffee ingredients, you’ll need about 7-10 minutes of your time, depending on the type of whisk you’ll be using.

Ingredients:

  • Two tablespoons of instant coffee

  • 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar

  • Two tablespoons of boiling water

  • 1 cup of preferred milk

Whipped Coffee Recipe

  1. Add the instant coffee, boiling water, and sugar into a bowl. (keep in mind that you can easily double the recipe). With a stand mixer or hand mixer, whip with one of the higher speeds. You can also mix it manually.

  2. Whip the whole mixture for about two minutes. Scrape the sides and whip any mixture that didn't blend well.

  3. Taste it. The mixture should be strong, but you'll use the milk to dilute it. Add about 8 ounces of milk to your favorite tall glass and add the coffee. You can add ice cubes if you want it cold. And that's it. You are done!

Keep in mind that with the whipped coffee recipe, the mixture can be super strong. But you can dilute it with milk. If you prefer a more robust coffee, use less milk and more dalgona coffee. You can adjust the sugar to your preferred taste.

Also, you can use any milk (including water!). Almond milk, soy milk, or any milk alternative can work just fine.

Keto dalgona coffee is straightforward to prepare, and it makes a delicious treat too! If you want to make keto whipped coffee, replace the sugar with a 1:1 ratio of your preferred powdered or granulated keto sweetener.

You can use swerve, erythritol, or allulose. Stevia doesn’t work the best because the whipped sugar needs the sugar to form the fluffy texture.

Vital Tips To Make The Best Fluffy Dalgona Coffee

To use whipped coffee ingredients to produce the best outcome, use almost boiling water. The water should not be at the boiling point or not hot enough. If you want to get the correct boiling water, boil the water and cool for about 3-5 minutes.

Preferably, use a stand mixer or electric hand mixer. Getting the fluffy to complete whipped cream can take about 5-10 minutes if you do it manually. So using an electric mixer can save you time and energy.

Dalgona Coffee Variations

  1. If you like chocolate dalgona coffee, add one tablespoon of cocoa powder when whipped coffee ingredients when whisking.

  2. For a Vanilla whipped latte, add 1 tablespoon of premium vanilla extract to the mix when whisking. Even if you want to have cinnamon in your diet, all you have to do is add to the mix.

  3. You can use ¼ cup of milk and add a little scoop of ice cream, instead of ice cubes, for a dalgona coffee float.

  4. Use coconut milk, almond milk, or any nut milk for dairy-free alternatives.

How To Store And Freeze Whipped Coffee

The fluffiness of the dalgona coffee can last for a few hours in the fridge. If you made a large batch of whipped coffee, refrigerate in an airtight container for about one week. But before you serve, you may need to mix it for some seconds because the liquid settles at the bottom of the container.

What Does Dalgona Coffee Taste Like?

The taste of the dalgona coffee is somehow predictable because of the ingredients in the coffee. The beverage is very sweet and bubbly, and the included milk makes the whipped instant coffee drink even sweeter.

The main strength of this beverage is its visual appeal and texture. As explained above, there are numerous variations of the whipped coffee, but the standard version takes the taste, visual appeal, and texture to the next level.

The flavor you get from dalgona coffee is not the same as other coffee brews, even if you make it from properly brewed espresso or coffee.

When you make a whipped instant coffee drink, you get a different taste indeed. It's intensely airy, contains a delightful flavor, and almost like meringue, which is not a surprise. The frothy mixture is not different from the meringue.

How To Balance The Caffeine And Caffeine of Dalgona Coffee

Dalgona coffee is a sweet beverage due to the sugar. Unfortunately, that can increase most people’s sugar budget for the whole day. According to the American Heart Association, women eat less than 100 calories (6 teaspoons) and men less than 150 calories (9 teaspoons) of daily added sugars.

If you want to avoid sugars, you have to find a sugar replacement that still melts together with instant coffee to create the fluffy texture. You can use granulated monk fruit and granulated stevia.

If you want to reduce the calories further, make the recipe as described in this guide. However, you pour the low acid coffee over unsweetened oat milk or almond milk instead of traditional milk. You can also decrease the sugar and carbs if you choose some nut milk.

If you like the dalgona coffee but don’t like more caffeine, you can try the decaf instant coffee blend.

Final Thoughts

As you have seen, making dalgona coffee is simple, with only three ingredients to need. However, if you want to make a whipped coffee without instant coffee, you need to know the underlying chemistry that makes the coffee foamy. The ground coffee mixture needs lots of sugar. That’s because it acts as a support for tiny bubbles in the whipped beverage. Making dalgona coffee without instant coffee is simple, and when done correctly, you get the same lovely taste you want.
